The mark begins with the right-hand stack and reads down and across to the left as Imperial Japan (大日本), Bunsei Period (文政年 / May 26 1818 - January 23 1831), Cast by Hitoshi Rokan (整 琅 鑄). A short version of this mark came up in the forum a couple of years ago and is available at the link. The vase shown there was judged to be of the period.

An issue for your censer is it seems, where the legs join the base, probably to have been manufactured with separately fabricated pieces, including the mark, which appears to have been soldered in place.

Druing the early 20th century, Japan contributed many reproductions of older bronzes to the decorator-market, including vases and other pieces meant to be converted by the lamp-manufacturing industry. It may be that your censer was made for the same market.

I expect our Japanese experts will help put this subject in perspective.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Pity you haven't given us a picture that allows us to see the whole thing. This would help us suggest its purpose.

However, its mark reads Dai Nippon, Bunsei year (1818) during the era of the emperor Ninko (1817-1846).

The last three characters are hard to read. A clearer picture would help.

It appears to be a simulation of some archaic Chinese object.
