Subject:Shang Gilded Gold Bronze Vessel
Posted By: KC Henry Wed, Mar 14, 2018 IP: 101.127.242.92

Can anyone identify if this a real piece from Shang Dynasty and why it's in black metal and gilded with gold? Any value for auction?

Your piece is a 20th c reproduction.
The proof is clear in photo #3.
You can see that the inside of the vessel shows it is composed of 2 pieces that have been joined together. This is incorrect for genuine Shang bronzes, and for that matter, almost all Chinese bronze vessels.
Shang vessels were cast as a single piece which is why they are so remarkable given that many pieces have quite elaborate designs.

Hi TimG,
Thank you for your response. But the gilded gold coating, look like real ancient gold. Will they use real gold to replica? Found a piece that looks alike at the Museum The Kulenovic Collection (Refer to the image attached)

Hello KC
I suppose it just goes to show how difficult it is buying genuine "antiques" (100y++), from Asia and perhaps especially China. Even experts can be fooled. As for the gold content that would have to be tested but the actual amount in weight is never going to be more than negligible and if used for the purpose of gaining a great dollar value is a paltry sum overall and worth it for manufacturer. It is a very good repro when compared to the museum example posted. I wonder if that one is coming together of two pieces. I suggest not if the curator knows his subject. Yours is very pretty though and I wish I had one. Even a repro. Best wishes D

Hi David.
I agreed with you that they go all the way to fake it. I really love my piece too. The museum might come with a joint too..lol. Not sure if during the early initial stage of building the bronze, they not so advance to built-in one piece. Too bad I don't have the top view from the museum.

Thank you for your comments.

Regards,Henry
