Posted By: RFM Sat, May 19, 2018 IP: 2601:281:c202:b68a:7

Greetings!
Found this nice old (I think) plate. Would greatly appreciate any help on identifying the mark and/or anything about the plate.
cheers!

First thing is that I hope(and expect) that the colors are a bit oversaturated.

Your plate is Chinese and from the 19th. century. The marking is what they call a minyau reignmark. This means it's an intepretation of an emperors 6 character reignmark from a maker who couldn't read or write. Mostly it's impossible to make anything of it. The two characters on the right stands for "Da Qing" (great Qing) and the two on the left for "nian zhi"(period made) so you have to concentrate on the middle two. My own best guess would be "Jiaqing" in this case.

Regards,

Arjan

Thanks much! Great info that I couldn't find anywhere! Cheers!
Also, it is "a bit oversaturated". Any significance of that? I assume it is a quality issue.

Several examples of this type of plate (and also bowls) are found near places where migrant Chinese workers came to work in North America. The ware was usually sold by suppliers to migrants from Canton.

Notice the Chinese character "chip mark" on the face of the plate, this is the owner's "nom de plume", used to identify personal property in a canteen or work camp situation.

I've also seen this style of identification mark on a Japanese Sake bottle found in Alaska.
