Subject:Identify Japanese embroidery
Posted By: Ben H Fri, Sep 14, 2018 IP: 70.185.197.104

This was my grandparents. They likely purchased it on a trip to Japan in the 1940s-1950s. It may be older than that. Nothing is really known other than it was hanging in their house until my grandmother passed.

It was one of the only things I wanted to have to remember them by. I have no plans to part with it, but would like to know the provenance, value, and inscriptions.

As you can see glass was damaged in shipment...so this is best picture I have until I get it re-framed.

Thank you!

Your embroidered picture is Chinese,
Inscription,
紅柳帆風 - Red willows - sailing boat in wind
It could be a half a century old.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you very much.

I thought it was Chinese at first...but when I ran it through google image translator it appeared to pick up some matches when set to Japanese, but none as Chinese.

Kind of felt dumb, but when researched I guess I didn't know how closely based on the Chinese Hanzi traditional Japanese Kanji is.

Can you tell me anything more about this style of art? What is the name of this type of embroidery of natural scenes where the text describes the picture?

Also, how are you able to date it to ~50 years? And is there anyway to identify an artist, region, or anything else specific to the style?

I would just like to learn more about it as it will be hanging in my home.

Just heard back from UPS that my claim is authorized, so I'm bringing it to the framers today for repair!

thanks.
