Subject:Textiles: What are these?
Posted By: Stan Tue, Sep 05, 2006 IP: 24.128.45.90

Forum folks,

I know a little about some things and nothing about a lot of things. This falls in the latter category.

What you see below are two textile panels (from a series telling a story?) about 8 inches square. The one thing in common is a floral motif at the top of both panels. I assume they are Chinese based on verbal history. They were presented for sale to a print dealer with some Chinese paintings.

The worksmanship is quite interesting/amazing. The threads (cotton?) from which the panels are woven are so attached at the color transitions that the attachment is almost undetectable. The result is that the panels are of equal quality from the front and back and one can't tell the difference between the front and back.

The gold threads in the center of the panels appear to be just that - gold threads. They form a fine metal mesh like a window screen and you can see through those areas when held up.

My questions are the usual:

1) Origin?
2) Age?
3) What story are they telling?
4) Most importantly: Should I pay $100 CDN for them?

I am rather taken by these panels and I breathlessly await your thoughts.

Many thanks,
Stan

sinoart,

Thanks for the information. I haven't bought them yet. My gut told me I should but my wife disagreed. ;-)

I think you just convinced me to spend some money.

Thanks,
Stan
