Subject:Chinese Doll

This item was listed at a local estate sale as a late 19th Century Chinese opera puppet. Any ideas?

I've also heard them described as Chinese 'opera costume' or just 'costume' dolls. Another is shown below.
Best regards,

Would the dating be correct for the late 19th Century?

I've always presumed from the condition of the example I own that it probably dates to the late 19th or early 20th century but have never verified its age with any serious study.
Best regards,

Bill H.
