Subject:Sumizuri-e print identification
Posted By: Mat Fri, Dec 16, 2011 IP: 79.129.44.107

I have this sumizuri e-print and would like to learn more about it. The measures are about 20 x15 cm. It is from an old collection and must have been bought in Paris around 1900. The antique dealer had no information about the subject or artist of the print. I believe it coud be from about 1700, but I am not at all an expert. Is it possible to identify the artist, and what does the writing in the upper right corner mean? Thank you very much in advance for any information! Mat

Mat,

It looks to me like it was new when purchased. Stylistically, it is closer to 1900 than 1700.

Cheers,
Stan

More in the style of Sugimura Jihei or Moronobu late 17th century and it is probably a bookpage (from a Meiji reprint?). The inscription reads 'Nobutsura' refering to the depicted warrior Hasebe Nobutsura (cfr Wikipedia).

I'm afraid that is all I can add.

Guy.
