Subject:Exquisite Satsuma vase question
Posted By: Gray Wed, Aug 15, 2012 IP: 99.242.136.7

Hello, I was just trying to find out the markings of this vase. Not too familiar. Would love to hear some peoples opinions. I'm not sure of the age, but maybe 1940's? Thank you

I'm a student of Chinese and not a Japanese linguist so welcome corrections by someone with the proper expertise.

To the far right of the circled cross from the Shimazu family crest, the characters read down as 'Imperial Japan' (Dai Nippon - {). Immediately below this symbol, the right stack reads down as 'Satsuma Province' (Satsuma Kuni? - F), and the left stack is apparently an entity which may translate to 'Visitors Bureau' (Kanji transcription uncertain - o@).

Beneath the foregoing two stacks and within a lobed rectangular cartouche is the single character (possibly read 'Minoru'), meaning 'real', 'true' or 'honest'.

To the left of the preceding cartouche is a final stack, which I believe is read down as 'Made by Akiyama' (Akiyama Zo - R). I found some references to Kutani and Satsuma wares that were made by 'Akiyama', but none showed the kanji, which precludes positive verification.

I hope the characters are visible with Japanese (auto select) encoding, but I've had problems with this aspect recently.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I Still haven't mastered the encoding but here's an image of the salient character info.

From, the right to the left:

Dai Nippon (Great Japan)
Satsuma kuni (Satsuma Province)
Mibae in (Miabe School)
Fūzan zō (made by Fuzan)

The character at the base is a seal that reads 'Mi' (Mibae).

I schould date it Meiji period - 1890s or even 1880s. First quality early export object.

Cfr link to similar marks

Guy.
