Subject:Peking glass or Bristol blue bowl?
Posted By: Toan Sat, Jan 12, 2013 IP: 86.178.139.10

Dear forum
I bought this bowl thinking that it is 19th peking glass bowl.Looking at it against bright light I can see some largish bubble
However some of my friend insist that it is Bristol blue ie European
It is measured 28.5cm
Your opinions are eagerly awaited
If you could advise on the pointers to differentiate old vs new,Peking glass vs European i would be immensely grateful
Happy New Year
Toan

Dear Adam
Thank you for your advise
Can I probe your mind once more to improve my knowledge of Peking glass
Do European glass bowl have this type of foot rim ?
I have copied a link to a bowl that was thought to be Peking glass by Bonham which is of the same size and the colour is not so diferent from my bowl
Please note I am not arguing that my bowl is antique or Peking glass but merely wanting to learn more about this subject

The term 'Peking glass' is Western wrong-name, was not glass factory in Beijing.

Recent glass-making in China has been adopting techniques from Venice and even workers from there, is possible glass made last 10 to 15 years in China could be Venetian color. In imitations of antique Venetian beads, recent China glass industry do better with blues than with reds.

Think there was some discussion Chinese glass use Venetian techniques here, search forum to find.

Any glass maker can make that kind of molded foot rim.

Really no way to say if made Bristol, China, Venice, USA, anywhere else, but also no reason to think is more than decade old. Could have had sticker say where made.

Good luck,
Cal

Hi Toan,

Here are a couple of pictures of a 4.25 inches-diameter late 19th century amethyst Peking Glass bowl I bought about a year ago from an eBay dealer experienced in Chinese wares. The major difference I see is the foot looks a bit more rounded than your blue bowl. Also, in my limited experience with this type of glass, I've found most of it to be fairly soft. Probably that way to facilitate easier carving and polishing.

Hope this helps a bit.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Looks to me Chinese though I don't have the eye to tell age. There's nothing wrong with the colour. You could check this: http://jd.cang.com/361703.html .It's dated Qianlong and definitely Chinese.
