Subject:Japanese bronze vase

Can anyone identify the marks on my vase or provide add. information regarding who made it and when?

The signature reads 'Takao zo' (made by Takao) (高尾造).

Takao is the name of a reputed Meiji craftsman of bronzes. If you post an image of the vase we could compare it with other items that are signed 'Takao'.

Seems to be a genuine Meiji bronze (last quarter 19th century). Notice also a shape that obviously inspired early artists of the 'Art Noveau' movement, starting in Europe in the 1890s.

I'm not a specialist of Japanese metalwork but I refer to a pair of vases sold at Christies London in 2008, signed Takao and Yozo. The pair at Christies seem to have a more refined finishing but it could be that your piece is somewhat earlier. On the other hand, I do see similarities with the organic decoration on your item, typical for that period. Unfortunately there is no image of the signatures at Christies.

Anyway, it's a nice object.
