Subject:Buddha Statue with Crown of Jewels
Posted By: Larry D. Thu, Dec 05, 2013 IP: 71.45.60.244

This small (6-8 inch) statue is either gilded bronze or brass with a bronze finish on some areas. It is very well modeled and the darker brown areas are molded to look like they were carved from wood. The details are fabulous and there are little stones (coral>?) inlaid around the piece. There is a makers mark (or foundry mark) on the base of the piece (picture 3). This one has a bad repair to the neck (it appears that the entire head had to be reattached and was done with thick glue which has turned brown over the years) and another repair to the left ear. Any thoughts on age, quality, or the maker are greatly appreciated~! Thanks so much~!

Dear Larry, your buddha is Maitreya-buddha of future-and is from Nepal. It is modern, so the inlays are not coral nor turquoise but tainted glass. The mark on the base is a visvajra or double vajra, a buddhist symbol currently engraved on tibetan and nepalese statues. The right hand is the gesture of gift, the left is the gesture of absence of fear. Rémy

Dear Larry,in my first message I was wrong.Your buddha is Dipankara, one of the buddhas of passed times. His right hand shows the gesture of absence of fear, the left one the action of gift.It is a modern nepalese bronze. Rémy
