Subject:Asian or Persian Print?
Posted By: Dave B Tue, Mar 04, 2014 IP: 68.84.176.148

Would anyone know what type of print this is? It appears to be a woodblock on parchment paper. There is some Asian script that is not really readable. I could try and post a positive of the print if that would be helpful.

Thanks in advance

Dave

Looks Chinese. The figure looks like the 13th C. Chan (Zen) Buddhist monk meditating facing the wall in his cave, a popular subject for Chan/Zen paintings.

This is a rubbing from a stone stele. Paper is applied to the stone surface, and pressed into the grooves in the stone. Then ink is applied to create a copy of the image. Rather like the Chinese early version of a photocopy.

Look like Chinese ink rubbings of 'Arahat' / Lohan.
