I was given an (incomplete) tea set by a friend. It says made in Japan on the bottom & from the little I have found out online it is likely to have been made either for export or as souvenir during 1950s. I haven't been able to find a name for this particular pattern - its quite similar to satsuma moriage tea sets, but not identical. I was wondering if anyone could help educate me on moriage tea sets and maybe even identify a name for the pattern!

Hi Emma,

You only can call the decoration "Satsuma style" but the body itself is porcelain and not crackled stoneware (Satsuma). The term "moriage" refers to the use of raised slip to get depth in the decoration. This kind of ware is indeed meant for export and tourists.

Hi Arjan, thanks for your response & for clarifying a few things. I knew moriage refered to the raised decoration but did not know that satsuma refers to crackled stoneware. I realise the set is probably not valuable - my friend bought it for next to nothing at a market - but I was just curious to know a little about the set/style as I hadnt seen one like it before.
