Subject:Help with bronze statue of tiger, signed
Posted By: Delia Tue, Apr 22, 2014 IP: 64.134.224.89 My son has inherited this lovely bronze, it is over 35" in length. Any help would be appreciated in identification. |

Posted By: Joe Benevides Tue, Apr 22, 2014 Wow! That’s a beautiful museum quality piece! Tokyo School bronze, c. 1890s. Much larger than usual, high quality and very valuable. One of the other forum members may be able to translate the signature cartouche for you. If the artist is well known (most are not), the value will be even more. In case your son was not already aware, don’t polish it or mess with the patina in any way and keep it dry. |

Posted By: Guy Wed, Apr 23, 2014 Totally agree with Joe - seems to be some 'pièce extraordinaire'. However, we need better images of the model and the seal in particular which is difficult to decipher. Could you make some other sharp pictures of this seal from different angles and lighting? |

Posted By: Guy Wed, Apr 23, 2014 I was a bit confused because the image of the seal was upside down. |

Posted By: Joe Benevides Wed, Apr 23, 2014 Update: Here's a 2003 Antiques Roadshow appraisal for a bronze elephant that's as unusually large as your son's tiger. In my opinion the tiger is much more beautiful and interesting, so a more up to date appraisal for the tiger would probably be more. |
