Subject:Japanese watercolor/gouache on silk Madonna and Child
Posted By: Tremain Haynes Sat, Jun 07, 2014 IP: 154.20.103.144

I just found today a similar watercolor on silk (link below) with a description written by Mr. Anthony Lee. This is the first time I have found any mention of this type of painting as a genre of Japanese art. My own is different but I believe, because of the horizontal folds, that it was also a scroll before it was framed. I am wondering if anyone can give me the name of the artist and, hopefully any information about him, as well as the approximate date. Is this also from the Taisho (Deco) period?

Hello Tremain,

With all due respect, I believe the painting you provided a link to was done by Sister Teresa of the Carmelite Nuns in Tokyo during the 1960s. The painting style is very distinct and consistent with other examples you will find at the website link provided.

Rather than a date, I believe the number 22 refers to a series.

Sister Teresa was very prolific in these paintings of the Madonna, they were used to mass produce printed Christmas cards which were distributed to Carmelite convents throughout the world during the 1960s. Those nuns in turn would sell the Christmas cards every year locally as a fund raiser for the Carmelite Order.

As a youth in a Parochial grade school during the 1960s we were provided boxes of these cards by our Parish nuns and asked to help sell them.

Best regards,
MPC
