Subject:14.5" Imari Charger - Looking for Information
Posted By: Eric Hausen Thu, Jun 26, 2014 IP: 74.199.120.155

Hello,

This is only the second piece of Japanese porcelain I've purchased, so I don't have a lot of knowledge under my belt. This was listed as a "Chinese porcelain charger," but I was quickly able to find out it is most likely Japanese Imari.

I'm not sure if the "rust" spots mean it's of recent manufacture or not. It measures 14.5" in diameter and 2" high. I haven't found a lot of examples with this "pinwheel" arrangement. Lattice, fish scale, and dragon patterns. Not sure what the orangish spheres are...flower? Of course the nice peony in the center.

I didn't pay a lot for it, so don't be afraid to tell me if it's a repro :)

Thanks,

Eric

Hi Eric,

No doubt it's Japanese and probably dates from the Meiji period.

Regards,

Arjan

Sorry for the late reply. Thank you Arjan for weighing in with your information. I continue to try and learn more. The one spur in the middle I assume is an indicator of later manufacture. I didn't realize at the time my pictures were blurry. I will attempt to attach some better examples for posterity.

Hi Eric,

Spurmarks are a good indication to tell a piece is Japanese. Most older Japanese ware have spurmarks and the amount depends of the size of the piece. After the early 1800’s mosts Japanese kilns stopped using that firing supports that caused the spurmarks. First for the smaller and later on also for bigger pieces. Sometimes (also later on in the Meiji period) you can find find a single spurmark.

Regards,

Arjan
