Subject:Chinese Blue & White Stem Cup?
Posted By: Matt U. Wed, Jul 16, 2014 IP: 207.170.194.74

Hello All,

Could you please help me identify this piece. I believe it is a stem cup, but I am not sure. It is heavily potted and stands 7 1/2 inches in height and almost 6 inches in diameter across the top.

Thank you for your assistance.

Matt

It resembles a Kangxi blue/white, but I don't know if it is a genuine Kangxi, Guangxu revival, modern fake, or something else.

I suggest that this is a Japanese sakazuki washer, not a stem cup.

Hi all,

I think Mike is right. It's a Japanese sakecup washer and probably dating from the late Edo period.

Regards,

Arjan

Thank you for the responses.

I agree the shape of the cup is in the form of a sake cup washer, but I do question that it is a late 19th/early 20th century Japanese cup.

The cobalt blue is not typical for the period. The cobalt is of much higher quality and has a purplish tinge, very similar to early Kakiemon pieces.

Later Kakiemon and Imari underglazed blue have more of a grayer tone or midnight blue.

Also, the painting is executed better than anything in Japanese save for early Nangawara/Kakiemon pieces from the late 17th/early 18th cent. However, I question that it is early Kakiemon as the porcelain has a hard/glossary finish, not the silky matte finish typically seen. I've attached a photograph of one of my Kakiemon plates (c. 1690-1700) for comparison.

I don't think this is 19th/20th century Kakiemon or Arita as I have not seen anything similar to this given the cobalt quality and execution of the painting and foot ring, but I could be totally wrong.

Is it possible this is a Chinese piece made for the Japanese market?

Thank you again,

Matt
