Subject:Can you help me identify this vase?
Posted By: Creighton Kerr Fri, Aug 01, 2014 IP: 68.196.16.4

I have no clue what it is. I'm pretty sure it's Chinese, I recognize 年 I think but nothing else. Does that make it a date? I'm interested in finding out what it is and perhaps how old.

This is a tulip vase or "tulipiere" with mark that reads from the top down and then across from the right as "Made in the Qianlong Reign" (Qianlong Nian Zhi). As such it is an exception to the general rule that Chinese porcelain in the rose medallion pattern is never found with Chinese character marks.

This vase was made circa the early to mid-20th century, and being a version of the pattern that's less well executed than typical earlier pieces, may have been produced by one of the factories that fled to Hong Kong and Macao in the 1930's to escape the civil war and subsequent Japanese invasion. However, being a scarce form of rose medallion, it still commands a rather large price at market. See following link:

Best regards,

Bill H.
