Posted By: Nay Murphy Wed, Jul 30, 2014 IP: 68.37.199.201

I stumbled upon this forum while idly searching for info on some of my possessions. I welcome any information anyone is willing to give. Many thanks in advance.

The pyrography: no sales planned, I just want to be able to answer guests' questions.

You have a print by Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858) titled "Nihonbashi Bridge in Snow (Nihonbashi setchû), from the series Famous Places in the Eastern Capital (Tôto meisho)" printed circa 1840-42.

Comparing your print to an original at the Boston MFA and noting the differences in the signature and the snowflakes in the black sky, I am fairly certain that your print is a later reproduction.

The URL is too long to include in the link. You'll have to copy/paste this one to see the Boston MFA original:

Cheers,
Stan

The artist is Kawaguchiya Shozo, inscription states that this is a print from a series of famous places in Tokyo, this one being Nihonbashi (the name of the bridge) in snow.

Many thanks for your kind and prompt response! I have penciled your information onto the back of the print so this question won't have to be asked again. I had attached a photo of a second, different piece but I don't think it has made it through the filters yet.

Actually the artist is Hiroshige. That is, the Nihonbashi print. The other print I'm not at all familiar with.
