Posted By: Carl Jackson Tue, Jul 29, 2014 IP: 81.134.196.226

If anybody out there please help with a translation of the attached inscription / engraving found on a very large Japanese bronze vase I would be extremely grateful.
Best regards, Carl

Kiln location seems to be 羊岛 but I'm not seeing where exactly in Japan that is.

Thanks for the response, I have been told elsewhere that some of the inscription refers to birds ( sparrows, cranes, peacocks various?) and sheep also made in great japan this was without seeing the vases. The vases are covered in panels actually showing sparrows cranes peacocks cockerels and deer.

Yes, but it depends on how accurately your drawing has transcribed the characters. When I put your characters together left to right in the order in which they would be read from your seal/inscription/whatever, it looks like you may have:
大日本羊鳥君崔
where 大日本 refers to "great Japan",
羊 which means "sheep/goat" but I think goes with
鳥 which means "bird" or perhaps more likely 岛 which means "island" to form a two-character place name, followed by 君崔? which is likely the artist's or producer's name.
Of course you are not bothering to show either the mark you want translated or the object that mark appears on so you shouldn't expect a definitive answer from me.

again thanks for your efforts, i am in the process of attempting to purchase this pair of vases that are quite large @ 30" tall, unfortunately in the light they were in it proved difficult to photograph the inscription hence the sketch, the seller was a little reluctant to let me photograph the vases so i was looking for a little help with the translation prior to purchase, my option to buy runs out tomorrow but will probably bite the bullet and go for them based on the quality alone.
If successful I will post some pictures then the inscription will hopefully make more sense.
Thanks Carl
