Subject:Stone Turtle Carving
Posted By: Aimee Mon, Aug 11, 2014 IP: 96.24.37.80

I bought this stone figure of what appears to be a teapot with turtle features. I didn't pay very much, and I didn't think much of it. Recently, I really took a good look at it, and became curious. Does this look like it could be made of jade or nephrite? I ask because I wiped a bit of the dirt off to find a red and yellow jade looking stone underneath. I would love to know more about it, if anyone can help! Thanks

It looks like soapstone. Soapstone is easy to identify. It has a waxy feel and is easily scratched. Take a sharp knife point or large needle and scratch it. It should leave a white scratch.

Cheers,
Stan
