Subject:Inro Information sought

Just purchased this inro and would love to know what the surface decoration is called in Japanese and how old this is.

Very interesting inro. Netsuke less so.

Is the inro made of wood? Does it come apart at each of those segments? The speckles look like grit, can you clean them with a soft toothbrush?

I'd guess (pure guesswork without having it in hand) late 19th early 20th century for the inro. The netsuke is likely to be newer.

Thanks for the reply. Examples online declare much older dating but fail to name this technique. Do you have a Japanese name for this style lacquer? Inro started life with 6 segments but 2 are stuck together possibly from age. One appears to have had the bottom knocked out and then glued to the end segment to make a double depth compartment, possibly to hold tobacco? Construction seems to be thin wood.

My last response hastily stated this was 6 segments. I'm fully awake now and can count better. Inro originally had Five segments. Sorry for the mistake.

For a better answer than I can give I suggest you post this at: http://netsuke.websitetoolbox.com/

There is an Inro sub forum.

They do say what they think, but if you need to know the facts about anything related to netsuke and inro, that's still the place to go.

Thanks but no thanks. As I said worst online experience in 16 years online. I'd rather NOT know than return there.
