Subject:Unusual Japanese picture - Any ideas?
Posted By: Fujin Thu, Aug 21, 2014 IP: 86.185.32.219

Hi!

I was just wondering if any of you kind people here could tell me anything about this unusual Japanese picture. The Geisha is made from some form of applique, which is then painted, and there is a painted Pine tree in the background. The mounting is like a typical Japanese silk material. There are two chop marks in the bottom left hand corner, one shaped like a gourd. I bought this picture a long time ago, because I thought it was very unusual and the painting was exquisite. I have never seen another remotely like it and it has always kind of bugged me that I know nothing about it, except that to me, it looks late Meiji to Taisho period. Any help would be much appreciated!

Same as the set of 3 you posted. Tourist piece common from the 1950s with quality decreasing through the 1970s. This one appears to be badly faded because textiles don't hold color well when exposed to too much sunlight.
