Subject:Help identify country of origin
Posted By: Buddy Fri, Aug 22, 2014 IP: 24.129.81.141

I picked this up at the flea market bundled with two woodblock prints. I am trying to figure out the country of origin or what the figures stand for. They are carved or cut out of paper and appear to be painted. They are in a frame but I don't want to take a chance of disturbing them by taking it apart.Any info would be greatly appreciated.

They are Chinese paper cuts. The deity in the top left corner looks like Zhang Guo Lao 張果老, one of the 8 Chinese Immortals. Usually, he is depicted riding his magic Donkey backwards, with his “Yugu” 魚故, or Fish drum. The top right looks like Sun Wukong 孫悟空, or "Handsome Monkey King". He is worshipped as Taoist Deity. The middle right is two chidren, and a Crane, usually children are used on Chinese New Year decorations. In the bottom left, it looks like Zhong Kui 鍾馗. He is a protector from Ghosts and evil Spirits in Chinese culture. The two cuts of birds are all Cranes I think, representing longevity :)
