Subject:emiko and friends: (unusual?) imari bowl
Posted By: ann Tue, Aug 26, 2014 IP: 173.51.94.90

Hi everyone.

I was hoping you could take a look at this Imari bowl. It's big and heavy -- 12 inches in diameter and a little warped from firing. I acquired it because I liked the painting of the fish (the painting of the rest of the bowl seems to me to be ordinary at best...)

Is this an image of a carp in a waterfall, or is it a flying fish? Has anyone seen other examples of this subject treated this way? It looks almost impressionistic to me, especially the way the fins seem to be fluttering. Do you think this painting is original and unusual in its treatment? I haven't seen anything like it, but I'm just beginning to learn about Japanese porcelain. Feel free to burst my bubble! :)

I assumed this is a Meiji-era product. I can always attach another photo of the bottom of the bowl. It has a double rim and no firing supports or painted mark.

thank you,
Ann

Hi, Ann
This pattern in the center of your bowl is a carp motif. A carp climbing a waterfall which is a popular design.
