Subject:cast iron buddha
Posted By: mazzy Thu, Feb 28, 2013 IP: 98.229.144.67

Hi, I have this cast iron buddha that I think is an incense burner. It has separate parts: the buddha and the piece the buddha sits on. The buddha beside him has on opposite sides a vase? that has two holes where I think the smoke from the incense would come out of? The dimensions are approx 5". Would anyone know anything about this piece, in terms of age, etc..? My pics are horrible and I apologize. They're were taken with my cell. Hopefully, you can see. Thank you

Hello, I think you will find that this incense burner is a copper and zinc alloy with a bronze finish. Check it with a magnet. It was sold by Vantine's (Google that) in the 1920s-30s and is their item #1202. You won't find it in their museum, but you may be able to read the Vantine's signature on the base with a magnifying glass.
Regards, Jim

Hi Jim, sorry I just saw your response to my post over a year ago.lol. The piece does not attract to a magnet. Also can't find the vantines signature. Do you think this piece is older than 1920-30? I also wanted to thank you for your help!

Hi Mazzy, Vantines sold a great deal of Asian style censers, but I don't think they did any manfacturing. So whoever produced this for them may have made some on their own, or for someone else with Vantines deleted. Yours had to be made from the same mold. Mine is heirloom and I know for certain dates to before 1930. I would think yours does too. Best wishes, Jim
