Hi Caroline,

The mark reads "Da Ming Chenghua nian zhi" Altough a Chinese marking te charger is Japanese and probably dating to the 19th. century.

Regards,

Arjan

Your Japanese Imari-palette charger has an apocryphal two-stack Chinese mark, shown on its left side and read in Japanese as 'Dai Ming Sei-Ka Nen Sei' (Made during the Chenghua reign of the Great Ming Dynasty). Japanese dishes with such forged Chinese markings often date to the late Edo period and earlier, including some in the Dresden Collection that are cited in the James Lord Bowes book, 'Japanese Marks and Seals in Literature and the Arts', first published in 1882.

Hopefully Arjan will be able to clarify the date of your charger. I would only add some gratuitous advice that you carefully remove that wire hanger and replace it with a sturdy wooden stand before the metal has a chance to inflict its inevitable harm on the glaze.

Best regards,

Bill H.
