Subject:LITTLE KRAAK DISH: Ming/Wanli?
Posted By: ann Tue, Sep 09, 2014 IP: 173.51.94.90

Hello forum members.

Any opinions as to the age of this little Kraak-style dish? Could it be late Ming?

Here are some observations which might not show up on the photos:

1. No radial chatter marks on the base that I can see
2. The porcelain has a blueish cast
3. Dish is just over 5.5 inches in diameter (slightly irregular)
4. I can't see any crackling, but looking very closely one can see thousands of tiny bubbles in the glaze.

The dish has been rimmed with some kind of soft metal which is very tarnished. I don't find the rim to be very aesthetically pleasing, but I suppose it should be left in place (yes?) Would it be all right to polish the metal, or is the tarnish considered to be "patina"?

thanks,
Ann

Hi Ann,

IMHO.... yes. I think it's Ming - Wanli and it has a rather typical (rim) decoration for a 1600-1615 dating. The size (14 cm.) is OK.
About the metal rim: It's probably done because of the fritted rim. I suspect that it isn't easy to remove? Normally I don't have problems with cleaning and polishing and make things as it was meant to be. In this case (and if you can't remove it to see what pleases you better) I would leave it this way.

Regards,

Arjan
