Subject:Japanese Print Artist Identification Help
Posted By: Bridgett Thu, Sep 18, 2014 IP: 65.129.180.168

Greetings,

I was gifted this print without any information. I am curious as to who the artist is, age of print, and location of house or tea house.

Thank You,
Bridgett

Thank you for the info! I was just informed privately that this is a newer print made in the last 10 years. How do I know for sure? Does it say the print date in Japanese on my print?

Thanks again for the info.

The artist is Kawase Hasui -- 1883-1957

Your print is by Kawase Hasui and is titled "Snow at Kiyomizu Hall, Ueno." The design was originally published in 1929 but there have been at least a few printings later than that. The absence of any publisher seals in the margins means that your copy is from one of the later printings. Kiyomizu Hall was built in 1631 and is locatwd in Ueno park in Tokyo.(from google search)
Hasui is famous for his landscape prints and his snow scenes are particularly admired.
A really nice print.

Thanks Willie!

My friend found it at a thrift shop and was going to resell it for $10 in his online store but decided to just give it to me instead since I was admiring it so much.
