The inscription begins with the two characters, "Chang Xing" (長興), which literally means "Ever-flourishing" but may refer here to Wang's native place, Changxing County (Changxing Xian - 長興縣), on the Western shore of Taihu Lake. The remainder reads down as "Wang Yuyi Xie" (王羽儀寫), "Wang Yuyi Sketched".

I found a Chinese language website with biographic information on Wang Yuyi (1902-1996) indicating he was born into a family where his father and grandfather both were artists. He went to elementary school at Ruoxi, in Changxing County, then began middle school in Hangzhou before transferring to Beijing No. 2 Middle School.

I Queried Wang's name on Google and came up with a book called "Old Beijing in Genre Paintings" and a couple of more editions devoted to his works. You might wish to go online and do some more searching to see if you can find a copy of any books devoted to him in a library near you, though I get the idea that his popularity may rest primarily in China. Perhaps others in the forum can give you a better fix on this artist.

Good luck,

Bill H.
