Subject:Arita Yaki bowl with unknown seal(Ryu)
Posted By: Colton Wed, Oct 01, 2014 IP: 76.106.212.108 I have been looking everywhere and havent seen one piece of arita yaki ware(or any other) with the "ryu" seal. Can anyone give me some insight on this? Thank you! |

Posted By: Bill H Thu, Oct 02, 2014 This and some other apparently transfer-decorated Arita-yaki wares I've seen seemed to date to the early 20th century. Thus, faced with a dearth of Ryu signatures on Japanese porcelain, I suspect the Ryu kiln that made this bowl possibly switched to military production during WW-II and afterward either merged with another manufacturer or didn't resume independent manufacture of tablewares. A change of name or logo wouldn't be out of the question either if the maker thought it might help end a streak of bad luck. |
