Subject:Old Chinese or Japanes charger
Posted By: Edward Tue, Oct 07, 2014 IP: 97.95.236.13

Japanese? Chinese? Satsuma? Not porcelain body. Very old pot. Thinking Japanese Satsuma 19th century but do not know mark. Any help would be appreciated.

Your dish appears to be Chinese. Has the appearance of Qianjiang School in its painting style. Mark reads down as 'ru he' (如合), with a meaning of 'like united' or 'as one'.

I'd guess the age to be early 20th century based on the enamel tones, especially the bright green.

Best regards,

Bill H.

The body is not porcelain. Does that matter?

The pictures on the Koh site make a convincing case for your dish being Vietnamese, thanks to wsas.

Best regards,

Bill

Hi Edward,

There is a good chance that your dish may be Vietnamese, from Lai Thieu, early 20th century. See the examples shown on koh's website.
