Subject:Is this a real jade flute and if so how much is it worth
Posted By: Naomi Brotton Thu, Oct 09, 2014 IP: 203.142.153.200

I bought this jade flute many years ago, but have never had it looked at to see if it's genuinely jade or not. So I wanted to ask if it is in fact a jade flute that I was told it was when I bought it, and if so, I wanted to find out how much it would roughly be worth, if anything at all.
Thankyou very much for your time

It looks to me like it is a softer stone, not Jade.

Your pictures are simply too large and too blurry to see what your flute was made of. Furthermore, it was really unusual to see any flutes made of real jade (either jadeite or nephrite), judging by the white (or lighter color) of the inside edges on the holes of your flute, the chance of it being made with real jade, IMHO, is close to nil. You can do a scratch test on it to confirm. You would probably see a white line when you scratch it. The value of it would be the beautiful music you can play with it. Enjoy.

Thanks for the advice, I did a scratch test, and a white line appeared, but when I ran my finger along the white line, it disappeared..
Also I looked into some other ways of determining if it is jade or not, and found info on a hair test, where you wrap a hair around the item, then put it under a flame for a second to see if the hair burns or not, so I tried that, and the hair didn't burn at all, I even tried it another dozen times to make sure, and it didn't burn or singe at all... Also, the flute is extreamly old, so the inside of the flute and figure holes are dirty, dusty and have many years of built up elements coating the inside, I extreamly doubt it has ever been cleaned inside at all after making the flute, as it wouldn't be an easy task to do that's for sure ..
I also read that jade is very cold and stays cold, even after trying to warm it up with your hands for a long period of time, so I tried to warm it up with my hands, and it wasn't getting any warmer, was still cold as after having my hand securely wrapped around it for 5 minutes...
If I can get some clearer pictures, I will upload them to try and give you's a better look..
I really appreciate any and all of the feedback, comments, opinions and advice that anyone can share with me..
Thanks again everyone😊

Sorry, it was not made of real jade, your scratch test confirmed it. Probably made of a soft stone such as serpentine, but since Chinese do label many stones including serpentine or xiu yu as jade, if you really want to call it "jade" it would be okay too.
