Subject:Chinese Silk painting - Literally know very little
Posted By: Childofthehorn Thu, Oct 16, 2014 IP: 209.253.157.229

Hello All.

I am much more familiar with Western Art and specifically Watercolor as that is what my aunt is a professional artist in.

I really liked the non-traditional subject matter and the amount of clean detail in this Chinese silk. I picked it up at an estate sale along with some other art items. The subject matter and colors spoke to me and fit in very well with my decor.

The original frame I will be getting redone, but I can only assume that this is above average due to the quality of the silk, detail, and apparently the piece was re-framed in the very early 1990's to the tune of $500 ( A recipt was attached to a hidden back panel. Trying to find an experienced Asian Art framer in the DFW area.

If possible, could someone tell me:

- Artist
- Era
- Unique considerations
- Worth getting appraised for insurance?

Here are all of the Images and Signatures.

Thanks all

Your painting is japanese, not chinese. It's a copy of a woodprint by the famous Hiroshige, called "the 38th station"(Okazaki). It's the road from Edo to Kyoto, called "the Tokaido"which has 54 stations.Woodprints were on paper,so your"painting" must be a kind of photograph.Sorry but i'm afraid it has no great value. This is a copy of a Japanese woodblock print by Ando Hiroshige. It is from the Hoeido edition of his 53 Stations of the Tokaido Road series. It is station 39 - Okazaki. The original print was done in the early 1830s. Your silk copy could have been done anytime since.

See link below and click on the Okazaki picture for a large picture.

As such, this has little more than decorative value.

Cheers,
Stan

This is Japanese, the original being a woodblock print by Hiroshige showing stage 39 of the Tokaido road (between current Tokyo and Kyoto). If yours is on silk it is a modern reproduction; woodblock prints were made on paper instead. Can you share the dimensions of the image? That may help others who know more about these. If you are removing the frame and this is indeed a woodblock, the margins of the paper on which it is printed may include seals that identify the publisher, so posting pictures of those will also be informative.
