Subject:Qing Basket?
Posted By: JLim Fri, Oct 10, 2014 IP: 144.132.166.71

Greetings chaps

Yet another auction near me, so bear with some questions from me.

First up is this object unlike any I have acquired before. It was represented as being a 19th century Chinese basket with lacquered bits.

http://s1200.photobucket.com/user/jlim2397/library/Qing%20Basket?sort=3&page=1

The decoration on the top is of peaches or possibly persimmons or pomegranates. Along the rim of the basket is a Greek Key pattern in lacquered wood. The fittings are in iron; the interior seems to be woven to resemble Chinese characters.

Does anyone think there is any age on this? Is it Chinese? Is it really Qing? And what do the Chinese characters say?

Thanks
JLim

The insides of the basket suggest this was something to do with a wedding. The left hand side has the classic double happiness character, while the right hand side has the character for 'good luck'

Not sure it goes back to Qing but definitely Chinese and perhaps three pomegranates, which, given the double happiness characters mikeoz pointed out, likely are meant as wishes for many children
