Subject:Identifying a vase
Posted By: David Wilburn Fri, Oct 24, 2014 IP: 82.3.127.43

Hi

I am trying to identify a vase for a friend of my wife. All I know of it is that it appeared on the Antiques Roadshow about 20 years ago, however it was taken by her now deceased father, and she does not know what he learned. They have had it in the family for about 80 years. It is 18' tall approx, and narrow when viewed from the side.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Searching on Google it looks like a Kangxi (K'ang Hsi) vase? Can anyone confirm this, and also does anyone know what this shape is called?

I can confirm that it is NOT a Kangxi vase.

Thanks for your reply. Would you mind elaborating on your reasons? I would really appreciate the help! The vase linked below appears to be identical.

Am I right to assume that the issue is the double line indicating that it is an Imperial piece which it obviously is not?

Hi David, As you point out, the mark looks to be convincing as a Kangxi imperial mark. However, the awkwardly thick and heavy potting of the base tell me that it is anything but. Rather the vase appears molded, albeit--judging from the Bonhams photo if you say it is identical-- with cartouches that are physically off center and tilted, something I don't believe would have passed Kangxi era quality control. I would also expect to see a whiter paste rather than the cloudy and glassy blue-grey clear overglaze visible here, as well as deeper blue in the cobalt and a greater contrast of the various hues of blue, particularly against the white paste. Finally the shape of this vase isn't one known to me as a Kangxi era form, though others definitely know more about Kangxi ceramics than I do.

Note too that the Bonhams description states "Kangxi six character mark, but later"
