Subject:Character(s) Translation
Posted By: Laura Tue, Oct 28, 2014 IP: 108.4.76.15

Hi there!

I recently acquired this brass planter with what I am assuming is Chinese characters on it? Does anyone out there know what these three mean?

Read from right to left, they're "Fu, Lu, Shou", standing for the Daoist Star God Trinity, Fuxing, Luxing and Shouxing. Respectively, these deities oversee matters of Good Fortune, a Happy Family and Professional Life, and Longevity. Your "planter" may be a censer made for a Daoist altar. Can't tell if the build-up within the characters is patina or brass polish, so will abstain from guessing about age.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Wow thank you so much for your response. I actually cleaned the heck out of it... It had a very deep patina to it. There are no markings but seems to be made very well. I got it from an estate that had some very fine asian pieces. I also picked up the most beautiful 19 c garden stools. I would be very curious as to what you think the age might be. I have attached the only picture of the piece pre cleaning. I'm so interested now :)

Best,
Laura
