Subject:big blue and white bowl
Posted By: george w Fri, Oct 31, 2014 IP: 172.13.162.153 It appears to be in the early stage of glaze being fallen off. Can anyone shed some light? |

Posted By: Bill H Mon, Nov 03, 2014 This is a basin of the type sometimes seen with a matching porcelain water bottle. Its pattern of swirling flora is called a "sweetpea scroll", though I'm of the opinion that the geometric design in the cavetto may not have been part of the early motif, which was popular on Chinese export wares made for Overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia during the early 19th century. Chipping on such basins isn't unusual because the porcelain bottle would usually sit inside it and frequently get removed for pouring. |
