Subject:Help identify six character mark (Japanese ?)
Posted By: Ken Sat, Nov 08, 2014 IP: 122.111.9.203

Hi,I have been trying to research this vase and its six character mark.
I am not having much luck and am hoping someone here may assist.
The closest I have found is a mark on the Gotheburg site for an Arita item?
I am also keen to know the age of this vase.
I would much appreciate any help and assistance.
Thanks and Regards,Ken.

The mark reads 'Saishintei Keiko sei'.

Thankyou for your assistance Guy.
Would you be able to identify the "style" of the vase.
Regards,Ken.

IMO this is gilt-lacquered Imari, with a gold 'hiramaki-e' Rimpa style design on a black lacquer ground in combination with a blue-white base. The heart-shaped design in the middle is a fan. Early Meiji period I suppose and probably a rare and desirable item on the market.

For those interested, here is the transcription of the mark in Japanese: 采真亭圭子製 (Saishintei Keiko sei).

A search via Google Japan gave no further result. J Bowes seems to refer to 'Saishintei Sisi' but I think that in Japanese, 圭子 is spelled 'Keiko', which is a woman's given name. Thus, the decorator could have been female as suggested.
