Hallo Mathijs,

Mayby others can help with the rest of the characters but a quick look tells me that the upper row reads " Dai Nihon" or great Japan. The dai before Japan is allways a good indication for a dating to the Meiji period. The characters on the right reads indeed "Satsuma"(in short form)but you made a contradiction in your description.
Charactaristic for whats often called "Satsuma" is that it isn't porcelain but more a kind of stoneware.

Regards,

Arjan

Hi to all,

The left-hand stack of kanji reads down as "Hozan Ga" (Painted by Hozan). There was a Meiji period artist named Matsumoto Hozan, but their work was much superior to the painter of this teapot (see link). Perhaps the teapot was by a later generation of the same family.

Best regards,

Bill H.
