Subject:Ittobori Matsu Daruma - Artist?
Posted By: Laurel Tue, Oct 21, 2014 IP: 98.148.15.115

Good morning! I learned alot about ittobori daruma in researching this unsigned piece, but so far haven't been able to confirm its age, possible artist or student of?

It is about 60 mm tall and has a very fine surface texture that looks like wire brushing.

Any suggestions?

Sorry, looks like my images didn't upload. I was waiting for the post to clear moderation to add images of Sukenaga and Sukesada daruma, too.

This post contains front, back and bottom of mine:

Success!

I forgot to mention the hand or finish on this piece. I appears the sculptor finished with a very fine wire brush. Maybe that will give some kind of clue as to who may have made it.

Seems distinctive and worth mentioning...

Thanks!

PS very difficult to photograph
PSS Just an FYI, if I type the code incorrectly, the images must be reloaded.

Probably mid 20th century. I have a nice hotei in the same style and size and wood -- possibly boxwood. Mine was obtained in Japan in the 1950s.

Thank you J. Lewis:

I understand there is an unbroken line of Suke__ Ittobori artisans in Hido province. Is that where yours comes from? And did you buy it from a contemporary carver or shop who sold it to you new? Signed?

I’m beginning to see the density and placement of wood grain, the inclusion of imperfections and probably this brushed surface are unique to each artist - so even though mine looks so similar to Sukenaga’s, it doesn't mean it IS a Sukenaga...

I'd love to see yours! Do you think you could upload an image of yours?

Thanks again! 

I mainly use my little Hotei as a prop in my bonsai displays and can't find a stand-alone picture. I'll try to get one.

J -

So sorry I couldn't reply sooner!

Thanks for posting your little hotei - he's marvelous...

I have so little to go on as far as mid century carvers... I was told that the extended line of carvers in Hido was probably the best place to start - really that was just a hint, though.

So again, can I ask you if yours came from anywhere near Hido? And was it sold as new to you from a shop with more work by local carvers?

and I'm guessing it's not signed? (otherwise, you'd have mentioned it!)

I just think it's kind of fascinating how faces on newer Daruma are carved to look so very like the old Daruma. I haven't seen enough of either to really understand the subtle differences between old and new, other than wear, of course.

Thanks again for posting!

Laurel

Nver been to (or as far as I know, near) Hito. I bought this so long ago, I have no idea where or what else was sold there.

Sorry.
