Subject:Reign marks
Posted By: Mark Mon, Nov 17, 2014 IP: 72.224.3.253 Hello, would anyone be able to identify the reign markings on the bottom of what i believe to be a ginger jar, I've looked online but can't find anything to indicate if this is very old or very modern, I'd be happy if someone could help with the translation, Thanks. |

Posted By: Bill H Tue, Nov 18, 2014 This looks to be a circa late Meiji to Taisho-era Japanese jar, possibly meant for storing tea or something other than ginger. None of the kanji comprises a reign mark. The right-hand stack possibly reads down as "Kai Kutani" (改九谷), a variation I've not seen before on Kutani markings but which may translate to "Reformation Kutani". The left-hand stack appears to read down as "Watano Zo" (綿埜造 - Made by Watano). |

Posted By: Guy Wed, Nov 19, 2014 BTW, the decorator was Watono Kichiji (born in Kaga, Ishikawa prefecture - dates 1860-1934). He started his workshop in around 1876 in Kobe and in 1880 exported Kutani ware overseas from Yokohama. See also related article. |

Posted By: Mark Wed, Nov 19, 2014 Thank you, no wonder why i was having so much trouble, when i originally purchased it, I thought it was Japanese but the people running the estate sale told me it was Chinese, I like it either way. |

Posted By: Jim Tue, Nov 18, 2014 This is not a reign mark, it is a Japanese Kutani mark. Kutani is an area in Japan with several hundred kilns. You might look for your mark at the link. Regards, Jim |
