Subject:info on Ivory table screen
Posted By: lori Wed, Nov 26, 2014 IP: 98.109.100.183

I have been offered an Ivory table screen and am hoping to get some information on it such as time period and relative value, as well as perhaps the maker since it does bear a signature mark on one of the panels.

It measures about 8.0 inches tall and each of the two panels measure 5.0 inches wide.

I thank you for your help in advance.
Lori

Shibayama (-technique) lacquer and ivory two-panel table screen.
Top quality early Meiji Period (ca 1880-90), depicting a scene with the monkey trainer, waving goodbye to his family.
Signed & sealed (not read).

Another similar piece, probably the same artist/workshop, was sold at Bonhams NY, 19 Sep 2008.

I'll defer help with the mark to others who know Japanese better than I do, but this would be called a "shibayama ivory screen". If you'll query that term via Google, you'll turn up auction results and other information that should be helpful. The forum search feature also will produce a number of hits on "shibayama".

Best regards,

Bill H.
