Subject:Chinese Octagonal Box Wood and Bone?
Posted By: Tom Sun, Dec 14, 2014 IP: 199.59.106.195

I saw something online which was similar to this piece. They were calling it a Zitan incense box. I was curious if it might be a repro. It seems well done. There are tiny magnets to keep the lid in place, so I am guessing it is from the 20th Century. It is signed on the bottom. There are two larger characters and two very tiny characters beneath which may not show in the photo. That part, at least, looks incised. It looks like wood but the white part has only vertical lines (no crosshatch pattern). Thank you!

this is a new decorative box, nothing to do with zitan wood and not meant as fine art. the inscription is a poem by prominent Song poet/scholar/painter/calligrapher Su Shi (aka Su Dongpo:

Thank you. I noticed almost the same piece had been in an auction listed as Zitan. Someone apparently made a mistake.
