Subject:Mikumo woodblock artist ID?
Posted By: lori Thu, Dec 11, 2014 IP: 98.109.100.183

I'm hoping someone can tell me the artist's name of a set of three (3) woodblock prints which are signed MIKUMO.
From what I have learned so far, they were printed (each in a limit of 300) in 1967 by Mikumo Mokuhansha publishing company in Kyoto.

They each measure 11x8.5 inches (sight).

Also, are they of little or much value?

Thank you,
Lori

The artist is Toshijiro Inagaki (seal: toshi), 1902-1963. The publisher is the Mikumo Mokuhansha company from Kyoto. In good condition valuation is 80 - 100 $ each.

I'm confused. If Toshirjiro Inagaki died in 1963, how can this print be dated to 1967?

I have a print with the same signature for 1969.

Because this is a posthumous edition. In Japan, the publisher is mostly also the owner of the printing (wood)blocks and has the full copyright on the design. Japanese woodblock artist were commissioned by publishing houses but had no particular rights on their own design. Sometimes, the blocks were sold from publisher to publisher. In that case, the new owner gets control over the copyright.
