Subject:Danqing Gongbi artist identification
Posted By: Lita Sun, Jan 11, 2015 IP: 108.20.3.172

I found 4 paintings by the same artist in a local shop, although I could only afford to buy 2 of them. There were also an additional 4 smaller paintings I assume to also be by the same artist, those however were not signed with a seal nor contained any inscription.

If possible, I hope to get the rest of them, assuming nobody else buys them before I scrape up the cash.

I can't figure out what the seal text is, but think the inscription says 丹青老人書意 ( Old man use danqing to write his feelings ) Did I get that right?

I'm not even certain, but I think the 2nd char. in the seal might be 雨 , but honestly, it could be something else close to that.

I'll post pics of the 2nd painting in an additional post since I'm only able to upload 3 images.

Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

Yes, sounds reasonable to me. This picture seems a bit better to me than the other one. Looking for 丹青老人 online doesn't identify your painter right away, though there is a guy from Suzhou named Liu Deqing who used this name. His bio doesn't mention him spending time in Hong Kong though; I think your artist is someone else. http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_6179dc270101e8dy.html

I don't have any good ideas about the seal unfortunately but think you are on the right track so far. Mikeoz has the expertise in that department.

Thank you very much. I appreciate your help.

I did wonder about the possibility of danqing being a name, but thought it was in reference to traditional Chinese painting, or "to write", etc. So, using it as a name would be easier to research, I think.

Just did a few quick searches in English and haven't been able to, thus far, find any works by Liu Deqing to compare, so will have to search in Chinese.

Thank you. Hopefully this is a start in the right direction in finding out more about the work.
