Subject:Tianghuan Stone.. yellow jade or something else even?
Posted By: Cordelia Sun, Jan 11, 2015 IP: 5.70.213.9

Hi. This is my first posting here... I have been collecting Orientation art for some time now...I often feel rather isolated in my hobby as I don't know anybody else who shares my interest and I am nervous of boring friends and family if I try to discuss it with them.... I have modern and old pieces in my collection....I am particularly fond of sculptural pieces... and I have many soapstones and also some jades... I have been studying the latter recently and I sometimes make purchases on eBay. I can see by the posts that there are some very knowledgeable collectors on here...and I'd be very interested to read opinions on this amulet I bought along with several jade pieces from an estate sale in New Jersey... The seller sold jewellery normally and commented that the jades were in a bag ...I got them very cheaply... None of the pieces scratch with a knife.. one or two seem quite modern but a couple seem really old to me with what appears to"crystal regrowth" in the less accessible areas.... Anyway I'd love to hear some opinions on this... The lustre just seems a bit shiny t be nephrite... and it does seem to be that lovely Tianghuan colour.... Many warm regards to my fellow collectors

I have to disappoint you, that is a softer stone than Jade, did you oil it?

I have seen several of these goat/god type carvings recently. They are a fusion of neolithic and bronze age themes and are newly manufactured

Hi.. No it is not oiled... It's very glossy in the cuts.... and it does pass the scratch test so it is not soapstone which is why I thought perhaps Tianghuan which I understand is softer than jade... It's the right colour.... Thanks for your comments Guys...! As I said in my other reply I am very interested to learn your pointers for discerning age on a piece...I actually don't care desperately about age as not being wealthy I never pay very much for anything.... and collect only because I like things... (I know I'm I the wrong hobby!) In saying that I have sold a few pieces I have tired of for sums over £1000 when I had bought them for less than £20.... I am interested in learning more about this fascinating subject however... Ive got a couple but can either of you recommend any books.... They will need to be in English however!
