Subject:Ming mark? (Ginger jar)
Posted By: Mike butcher Fri, Jan 23, 2015 IP: 10.145.170.6

Hi all, I have 2 old ginger jars which are very similar, one has a set of 3 raised marks under the glaze. Could anyone help me identify era/origin please? I have searched and searched and the closest match was a ming!! Thank you

Definitely not Ming and perhaps (likely?) not Chinese either, even though I can't make out all 3 characters clearly. Photos of the rest of the jar should provide a lot more useful information.

I found a Chinese-language web forum discussion of a jar with this mark, which would be read "Yong Long Sheng" (永隆生) in Mandarin and "Wing Lung Sang" in Cantonese. One forum contributor indicated it was "frequently seen", and another provided a commercial firm name, which Google pinpointed in Hong Kong as the "Wing Lung Sang Porcelain Branch" (永隆生瓷器莊) on Lai Chi Kok Road in Kowloon. Another Google hit also mentioned a "Wing Lung Sang Trading Co., Ltd." (永隆生貿易有限公司) in Hong Kong, though I did not attempt to determine if the two are connected.

I can't say if it's just an aberration in the clay or not, but there may be another character just below and to the right of the "Sheng" character on your jar.

Since you appear to be having a problem downloading photos, I've included the link to the Chinese forum, where there is a picture of a Wing Long Sang jar.

Best regards,

Bill H.
