Subject:Chinese blue white ginger jar red marks on sides

This jar is missing it's top, I have never seen these with red marks on the sides, has 2 of them from what I can see, hard to make out characters, anybody know anything about this, age, markings etc.

Hi Billy,

The red mark seems a rubber stamp version of a "Jian ding" which is an export approval marking. Mostly executed as a sealmark but in (f.i.) Guandong(Canton) a rubberstamp version was also used since 1949 and on.

This type is also commonly called a wedding jar because of the character. 19th century, usually attributed to Jiaqing or Daoguang reign.

A 19th century wedding vase, Thank You. I have it listed on ebay as a ginger jar with red seal marks. Is it a valuable piece or not ?

Hi all,

It isn't a vase ... it's a jar and original there should be a lid on it as you can see on the picture. Because of the characters on it (2 times the character for happiness) This decoration is often called "double happiness" . I also include a picture of a vase with this decoration.

Compared to the examples shown by Arjan, with their crisp decoration, there's a great amount of "flow" to the blue in the main pattern, as well as an anomaly in the geometric diaper at the shoulder. These issues suggest your jar may be transfer-decorated, thus are no older than the early 20th century or possibly made much later. Modern porcelain-painting studios are not beyond faking the red inspection marks to suggest greater than actual age in their products.
