Hi All,

Is it possible, that this cup is from the Daguang-period?

Thanks in advance!

I have this Daoguang (1821-50) 4.5-inch dish also with a floral pattern of above-average quality and a seal-script reign mark that I take to be of the period. The piece has similarities to yours in its design, enamels and outer diaper of ruyi-head lappets. The upper right element in the last character of its mark ("Zhi" - 製 - "make"), is written with a different hook than yours but otherwise is stroke-for-stroke the same. This doesn't mean one or the other of our porcelains isn't of the period, because the marks could have been written by different calligraphers in the same or a different shop. Patterns were not patented, and while our pieces may appear to rival official wares, a number of workshops in Canton were engaged at the time in decorating porcelain of all types in the high quality desired by foreign clients, including royals from the Mughal monarchy of India, who favored patterns like these.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you for your experties! My bad feeling about the contemporary blue and white bowl is minimal, because of your confirmation of the age of this cup. :)
